The burn is one of the most common household injuries. Some burns can be treated at home as it doesn’t have any severe health consequences, while some require instant medical treatment and immediate guidance and care of a doctor.
Mainly, there are three types of the burn; the first, second, and third-degree burn. Each degree determines the extent of damage to the body, caused by the burn.
The first-degree burn is associated with only the topmost layer burn of the skin, the second-degree burn ranges beyond the outermost layer and the third-degree is the life-threatening burn that affects every layer of the skin and might also cause injury to other organs such as bones.
Only the first-degree and the second-degree burns can be treated at home.
Here is the first aid measures to take and some home remedies for treating first-degree and second-degree burns.
1. Get away from the source
Take the person out of the fire or stop their contact with steam, hot liquids, or others.
Remove flaming material from them.
Remove burnt clothes or other hot materials from them.
Take off any jewelry as it would become tight due to skin swelling.
2. Cool the burnt area
Rinse the burned skin with cold water for 10 to 15 minutes.
Do not apply ice as it can damage the tissue.
Do not break any blisters in the process or apply butter as it may cause further injury.
3. Clean the burnt Area
Wash your hands before doing anything.
Do not touch the burn if there are blisters as the open blisters can be infected easily.
Use mild soap and water to clean the burnt area.
Do not worry if some of the burnt areas come off.
Pat the burnt area dry with a clean cloth.
Antibiotic Ointment such as Polysporin or Bacitracin can be used.
4. Bandage the burnt Area
A bandage is only required if the burned skin or blisters have been broken open. Take a bandage and wrap the burnt area loosely.
Do not put pressure on the burn while applying a bandage.
Do not tape a bandage to circle a leg, an arm, or a hand as it may cause the skin to swell.
If the bandage gets wet, take it off and apply a new one to prevent infection.
If the bandage gets stuck to the burnt area, soak the bandage in warm water so that becomes easier to remove.
Home remedies to heal a burn
If you have burned your skin, these home remedies will definitely help you to heal quickly, relieve the pain, and prevent scars.
1. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is the most common remedy for treating burns. Aloe Vera not only helps to reduce pain and swelling but helps the skin to repair and grow.
You may use a store Aloe Vera gel or fresh Aloe Vera straight from the plant. When you buy a store Aloe Vera gel, make sure it is 100% pure. Apply the gel as instructed.
To use the aloe from the plant, take an Aloe Vera leaf and cut it into half. Then, remove the insides of the leaf to extract the aloe. Apply a generous amount on of aloe on the burnt and avoid rubbing too hard. You can repeat this about two to three times a day.
2. Mint toothpaste
Mint toothpaste is ready to use home remedies for minor kitchen burns. It majorly helps in reducing the pain and the burning sensation. To use mint toothpaste for burns, all you need to do is to remove the lid and apply a thick layer of it on the burnt area.
After the toothpaste gets dry, wash it away with water.
Another treatment for burns can be tea bags. The tannic acid present in the black tea helps in drawing heat from the burn making it less painful.
To use tea bags in a burnt area, place two to three tea bags in cold water, after removing the tea from it, place the bags carefully on the burn. You may also use gauze in order to hold them in place.
Vinegar can be great in healing a burn. The acetic acid present in white vinegar helps in reducing swelling and itching of a burn. Vinegar is also antiseptic which keeps the burn from getting infected.
Just like tea bags, vinegar draws heat from the burn, which dulls the pain naturally.
In order to use vinegar on a burn, soak white vinegar on a cotton ball and dab gently on the burn. You may also use paper towels in place of cotton balls.
Honey is another remedy that is commonly used in healing scars. The natural antibiotic content present in honey prevents a burn from being infected. Honey also helps in keeping the burn moist, which helps in the minimization of scars. I
f you have medicinal honey, use that, if not, the second-best option is organic honey. Avoid using rhododendron based honey as it contains powerful toxins.
To use honey on burns, take a generous amount of honey and pour it over the burnt area. With a thin plastic bag or a small wooden stick, spread the honey over the wound. Avoid using hands. Then, use a bandage to cover the affected area.
When it comes to treating burns, milk is excellent. Milk contains protein and fats, which helps the burn to soothe and heal quickly. To use milk on a burn, soak a cloth in milk and apply it on the affected area.
You can also simply soak the burn in the milk for about fifteen to twenty minutes. After that, cover the burnt area with a clean bandage. You can wash the milk off with cold water after twenty-four hours.
7. Coconut oil
Coconut oil is amazing when dealing with burns. It contains vitamin E which is great for healing burnt skin. Its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties prevent infection of the burn. To reduce scarring, you can use coconut oil with lemon juice.
Lemon has acid in it which helps in lightening marks. Simply apply the coconut oil to the burnt area about two to three times a day. To use coconut oil with lemon, take about 2-3 drops of lemon on a teaspoon of coconut oil and apply throughout the day.
Lavender oil is amazing when it comes to the prevention of blister formation and skin peeling in a burn injury. The healing power of the lavender oil was discovered by a French chemist, Rene Gattefosse who, when burned his hands in an accident and rushed to a tank full of lavender oil.
The lavender oil helped in easing the pain and healed the burn quickly. You can apply the lavender oil directly on the burn about two to three times a day. You can make a lavender oil spray by adding about eight to ten drops of lavender oil to a cup of distilled water.
Place the mixture in the spray bottle and shake well to combine it and spray it on the affected area of your skin.
Oatmeal is helpful to soothe your skin after a burn in order to lessen inflammation. It is especially useful when the burn is starting to heal and being itchy.
Oats help in reducing the itchiness of a burn. To use oats on to your burned skin, take a cup of oats and add it to a bowl of lukewarm. After it is nice and soft, apply it on to the burnt area.
